The Beauty of the Fold: A Conversation with Joan Sallas

Hi.
I saw this book: The Beauty of the Fold: A Conversation with Joan Sallas edited by Charlotte Bimbaum

This second book in the ground-breaking On the Table series about the culture of gastronomy as artistic expression - edited by Charlotte Birnbaum - delves into the art of napkin folding. It features German master Joan Sallas, whose folded napkins graced the Metropolitan Museum's exhibit of 1780 Viennese royal table silver. (Watch him fold a ''water lily'' napkin on YouTube.) Birnbaum interviews Sallas on the history of napkin folding, stretching back to the Renaissance and Baroque, and contributes a short essay on the art's complex history; the remainder of the book is an illustrated catalog of Sallas's ornate folding techniques.

Has it some of the parts of "Gefaltete Schönheit" by Joan Sallas? Is it a good book to buy?

Good luck,

José Tomas Buitrago

I thought perhaps Joan would say something about this, but I know he is travelling at the moment and might be too modest anyway. So just a few words from me...

The contents are similar to "Gefaltete Schönheit", but it's much shorter (88 pages) and not as detailed. It explains the history of napkin folding and shows examples of the various types of napkin fold. You can see some of the pages here:

I would say that the two books are complementary and both essential for anyone interested in napkin folding. Also, it's in English, and for around €16 you can't really go wrong.

Hi,
I also bought from Amazon, " On the table II ."The beauty of Fold...Conversation with Joan Sallas.."a while ago
A little book with good documentation and historical facts, and pictures of amazing folded napkins.(The nine folding families)
I will recommend to get a copy of it, if it is still on the market...
That´s also, why I am really interested to buy Joan ´s book when it will be released in english...
