The film is "Silk" by François Girard (2007) from the book "Seda" (1997) by Alessandro Baricco.

The novel/film is about a 19th century French silkworm merchant-turned-smuggler who travels to Japan in search of silkworm eggs to replace his town's supply that were killed by disease.
He meets a Japanese woman and in one of the last scenes with them together, she passes him a note, folded into a "lover knot" (To be precise : a "star-lovers knot" as named by the late Elsje van der Ploeg in BO Mag 265, Dec 2010, p. 30-31).
