This was a project written for publishers Streling Press, through
Sarah
and David King of D&S books. Being a 2 person team, they like to form much
closer relationships with their authors and consequently you feel your thoughts
are actually being listened to! They also insulate you from the corporate face
of larger companies.
The title was originally "Super Simple", but changed at the last
minute. I'm not convinced that the origami should be "super quick" (implying
rushed work) or that these are all "super simple" (there are slightly
more challenging designs later in the book) but the decision was out of my hands.
I chose some designs by other folders that I felt deserved exposure, along
with original designs created to meet a fairly tight deadline. (When are deadlines
ever anything other than tight?). I was especially pleased to include a "monkey"
by Kunihiko Kasahara, one of my very favourite creators. The publishers suggested
which subjects were appropriate and vice-versa.
The artwork was to be photographed and I was pleased to see how much care and
intelligence the photographer used. He'd worked on origami projects in the past
and was familiar with the need for careful lighting.
