Paper Cranes for Japan

cranes for JapanYou may be aware that several groups are involved with raising funds for work in Japan following the tsunami.  There is an independent project titled ‘Origami for Relief‘ with all donations and funds raised going directly to the British Red Cross.

I saw one of their stands today and the volunteers had all recently learned to fold the crane. At £1 each, they have already raised over £700 – not bad for non-folders! It’s great to see origami being responsible for helping this deserving cause – if you see them, buy a crane!

They also have a facebook page – what’s not to like?

  1. Thanks for the visit to our stand and for posting about our efforts on your blog, we really appreciate it! The origami pieces you created for us will be standing proudly with our cranes. :)

  2. Good idea, Nick, setting up this blog, and the pointers towards other people and groups using origami to raise funds and showing solidarity with our Japanese friends. A couple of weeks ago I did 3 lunchtime sessions in my office’s kitchen areas, teaching people cranes in exchange for donations to the Red Cross. It was very successful and enjoyable and raised in all £168.00. Many people kept the cranes they folded, others donated them to be sent “somewhere” in due course, so I have a box of cranes ready to go. I’ll have a look at the various places asking for cranes and go from there. As well as the donations and the cranes, it also meant I met a different lot of work colleagues in a different setting, and wearing a different “hat” than normal. I’d recommend folding cranes – or anything else that takes your fancy – and raising money at the same time. Happy folding! Tony
